State-of-the-Art Plumstead Centre Now Open – Open Day with Free Activities Saturday 29th February
After a 15 month renovation which saw a significant investment from the Royal Borough of Greenwich, today sees the much-anticipated opening of The Plumstead Centre on Plumstead High Street. Managed and operated by Better in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the centre is a flexible and accessible community space with facilities and activities for all ages.
The new Centre consists of health and fitness facilities, children’s soft play, performing arts spaces, community meeting rooms, a large café, and of course the Library, which will be housed in the original Grade II listed Public Library building, built in the early 1900s.
The front of the library has been restored beautifully, and really stands out on the high street. Looking at the side of the building on Quilter Street, you can see the extent of the extension work that has made possible the inclusion of the gym, sports hall, and impressive Book Mountain, a large set of wooden steps where members of the public are encouraged to sit and read.
The children’s library, soft play, and the range of lessons and activities offered in the performing arts and sports programmes will be a welcome addition for the Plumstead community, providing vital entertainment and stimulation for local children after school, at the weekends, and during the holidays.
Win a FREE Soft Play Session & Annual Fitness Membership on Open Day
Throughout Saturday 29th February, The Plumstead Centre will host its Grand Opening celebration. The centre will be offering free taster sessions of everything the centre has to offer, including its children’s performing arts, library and sports programmes. Members of the public will also be able to test out the equipment in the brand-new gym with a free pass for the day.
Additionally, the centre will be running a competition for children to win a free soft play session, as well as the chance to enter a prize draw for a free Adult Annual Fitness Membership. Every child that completes one library taster, one sports taster, and one performing arts taster will be given a free soft play voucher.
Children will be given a postcard as they arrive at the centre on the 29th, on which they can collect signatures from activity coordinators for each taster they complete. They will get a goody bag and a soft play voucher when they hand in their completed postcard – but don’t worry if you don’t have time to do all three. Every postcard, complete or not, along with everyone who registers their interest or takes out membership on the day, will then be entered into the prize draw for the annual fitness membership, worth over £300!
Performing arts taster sessions include ballet, tap and drama, with sessions throughout the day tailored for age, ranging from 18 months to 17 years. Much of the performing arts programme from The Eltham Centre that has previously been hosted at Academy Performing Arts in Woolwich will now find its new home in Plumstead, as the Vault and Triplets spaces within the centre are ideal for performance.
In the Sports Hall, get the little ones trying out Football, Mini Tennis, Boccia, and Taekwondo, with many sessions led by the team at Xplore, the healthy lifestyle programme for children, young people and their families. It helps kids become fitter, healthier and more active, with regular sessions running out of the Plumstead Centre as well as other Greenwich leisure centres.
In the library, face painting, story and rhyme -time, crafting, lego sessions and more will be run throughout the day – including a book signing by writer and acclaimed storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton.
Sally has published several children’s books, her latest being Greek Myths, Stories of Sun Stone and Sea. She co-founded The Company of Storytellers, spearheading the revival of storytelling in the UK, and has created work for The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Unicorn Theatre, Southbank Centre and Welsh National Opera.
You can visit the Better website for timings and more information on the day’s events.
