Happy New Year! Chinese New Year that is and this is the year the of the Monkey!
So what is Chinese New Year? Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year marks the turn of the Chinese lunisolar calendar meaning the date changes every year. Those born in the Monkey year are supposedly sociable, lively, confident and honest, but may be prone to bouts of jealously and cunning. Oooh! Notable monkeys include Di Vinci, Dickens, Caesar and Will Smith.
With the main festivities due to kick of next Sunday with the famous parade in Central London. Closer to home we’ve pulled together some options to help you celebrate and welcome in the new year in style.
For family activities head to the National Maritime Museum on the 13th Feb, where you’ll find a day packed with lots of new year inspired activities fun from 11:00 – 4:00PM If you prefer to make a day of it pop on the DLR over to the Museum of London Docklands where you can watch and learn traditional dancing, hear stories and create you own masterpiece all inspired by the spring festival.
Don’t fancy going out? Then introduce the Kids to Monkey! That brilliant 70/80’s TV show where clouds were not just for rain but travel and also magic. based on the Chinese novel, Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng’en.
Chef on strike? Then we also have some great local restaurants and delivery options. Sadly my personal favourite Mr Chung, has now gone but there are others. Sun Ya at Blackheath Standard makes a mean lemon chicken, is family friendly and also has collection available for telephone orders.
Although not Chinese both Zaibatsu and Kitcho by Ajiichiban both scratch a culinary itch, accept MumsCard and make a great alternative too!
