Chinese New Year Family Festival
8 & 9 Feb 2020 – 11am – 4.30pm
Celebrate the Year of the Rat at this family festival located just a stone’s throw away from London’s original Chinatown in Limehouse. Enjoy dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, creative workshops and much more over the weekend. This family-friendly event is a perfect way to introduce the little ones to the traditions of the New Year and Chinese culture. Please note, some events will be available to book online in advance and may carry a charge. Details will be available on the website closer to the event. This family event is kindly supported by Tower Hamlets Council.

The Great Stink
15 & 16 Feb 2020 – 12-12.30pm, 2-2.30pm & 3-3.30pm
Travel back in time with storyteller Emily Grazebrook to the stench-filled summer of 1858 in this interactive session. Hold your nose as you move through the museum galleries and discover the dirt, disease and pollution which created the Thames’ Great Stink!

Learn about the birds that inhabit the River Thames and take our beaky challenge. Make your own beak and then use it to scavenge materials and build a nest using clay.

Can you help rebuild the iconic London Bridge? Be inspired by the original Roman crossing and learn about weights and measures from Londinium. Then construct your own bridge from craft materials and test it out!

Augmented Reality Sandbox
18 Feb 2020 – 12-1.30pm & 2.30-4pm
Join the River Wey Trust with their Augmented Reality Sandbox and discover more about the topography of the River Thames. Use your hands to shape the sand and change London’s landscape. Make it rain or drain the river away to see the effects it has. This experience is free, but ticketed. You can pick up a ticket from the Information Desk on the day (spaces limited).

Monster Soup Puppets

The Thames was once so foul and full of yucky bacteria that an artist called William Heath named the water ‘monster soup’! Join Moth Physical Theatre to make your own bacteria-inspired monster soup sock puppet. Then discover tricks and tips to perform with it.

Imperial College presents – The Science of the Thames!

Join students from Imperial College London as they take over the museum to explore the amazing world of science and technology in the River Thames! Be intrigued and inspired as you investigate your way round the galleries at various stalls run by the students. This event is drop-in between 11 am-4 pm, but some stalls will have specific timings (see programme of events on the day).

Grab a lab coat and investigate climate change in this investigative family workshop. Budding scientists can take part in mini demonstrations of water wheels and dams to understand how humans cope with rising water levels. This workshop is free but ticketed. Explore the museum at this relaxed early opening, sensitive to the needs of children with autistic spectrum conditions. Celebrate the Year of the Rat with Chinese New Year-themed activities and enjoy a visit to our Mudlarks children’s gallery. This event is free but requires online advance booking.

Join us for an exciting festival weekend developed in partnership with young people from the Osmani Trust in Whitechapel. Celebrating International Women’s Day while exploring the experiences of British-Bangladeshi women and children in East London, this lively and thought-provoking festival will be full of creative activities for all ages. The festival is part of Curating London, a four-year contemporary collecting project supported by Arts Council England seeking to capture London as it is right now.
