The history of Greenwich Theatre is firmly anchored in the traditions of English live entertainment beginning just over 150 years ago when John Green established the Rose and Crown Music Hall on our modern day Crooms Hill site.
Then a Second World War incendiary bomb crashed through the roof into the auditorium. The Theatre closed and remained empty.
On 21st October 1969 the theatre re-opened with a new piece of musical theatre written by Ewan Hooper and Martin Luther King. Over the next 28 years, Greenwich Theatre has produced a body of work of astonishing quality and variety under the artistic directorship first of Ewan Hooper and subsequently of Alan Strachan, Sue Dunderdale and Matthew Francis. In 2007 James Haddrell became director, re-imagining the theatre as you see it today…

The theatre’s programme includes something for everyone. In particular, for families it presents the annual Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival, co-produces the annual Greenwich World Cultural Festival with Greenwich Dance, and produces a free outdoor summer show (awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark in 2008). Their work with young and emerging artists has grown rapidly and the company now runs a hugely oversubscribed artist development programme, supporting young or new companies as they grow and evolve and presenting an annual Emerging Artists season every May.
Here is a sneak peek of what’s coming up over the next 4 weeks.

We Say…
The cinema is great and – I know this is going to sound very high brow and isn’t meant to be – but, the Theatre is even better. Especially if it’s small and intimate like ours at Greenwich, being literally a few feet from the stage will make you and the kids really feel part of the process. And if yours are anything like ours, it’ll be two big thumbs up!

Lloyd Evans aged 9 and Ezra Evans aged 4.
Mrs Mc Moon made me laugh so much I fell off my chair! She was like a mad but funny lady who came up with crazy stories. I liked getting involved in the performance and my little brother didn't want to leave afterwards. I would recommend it to all my friends and I want to go back and see more.
just took the boat across the river to Trinity Buoy Wharf to see this amazing show created in conjunction with Greenwich Theatre. It was a great family themed event. Good for ages 6 + I would say. Really clever set design and excellent acting. Very well performed in a roving theatre style, with plenty of music sound and some puppetry.
